GOT WOOD?

With gyms closed, travel banned and outdoor climbing limited, we decided to stay local with this next series and look at the different home woodies within the Blue Mountains climbing community.
Totally unscripted and unplanned, these videos are a portrait of both the climber and their training boards, a sort of “behind the scenes” view into the training lives of individuals and a hidden backstory within our rock climbing community.
The Woodies in these videos differ greatly. Ranging from hand crafted pieces of timber housed in a run down shed, through to full scale, purpose built home gym constructions.
Enjoy them for what they are!

Ep01.

Jake Bresnehan.

On initial inspection, Jake’s Woodie is pretty simple. A Beastmaker hang board and a few select project edges housed neatly in an upstairs bedroom. But it is in his office space that his home training setup gets interesting.

Positioned next to his computer is a free standing, custom built System Board that has been in the Blue Mountains climbing community for nearly 2 decades. Originally built by Phillip Sage, the board is a well planned combination of professional holds and timber edges, featuring a set of large Copper Logs, perfect for wide grip body positions and endurance training.

The board is simple in design, yet really allows you to train a variety of different strengths and was famously used by Phillip Sage to train for the Centennial Glen test piece, Better Than Life, (Grade 32/8b+) that he was able to do in just 3 tries!! Boom!!

Ep02.

Ben Cossey.

Found in a run down, back yard shed is a training center that has helped shape one of the countries strongest athletes. As much a work of art as a training tool, Ben’s woodie is a collection of hang boards, found weights and lovingly crafted timber edges, specifically created with a particular goal in mind.

Set amongst broken bikes, stacked boxes and retired climbing equipment, the well loved pieces of timber are adorned in drawings and scribblings, expressing the character and personality of the artist who created them.

Ben’s Woodie is true testament to a DIY approach and shows what you can make with a little bit of creative thinking and $50 to spend in the Bunnings hangboard isle.

Ep03.

Lee Cujes.

The envy of the entire Blue Mountains rock climbing scene is the Cujes Castle! A collection of everything you could possibly need to train for climbing, all housed in a purpose built, air conditioned construction.

Everything here has its place….Everything! The brushes, the weights, the fold away campus board and the collection of 8 different hang boards should you need a slightly varied grip position to train on. But dont think of turning up for a casual session uninvited, the Cujes Castle is protected by motion sensors, facial recognition software and laser turrets. Am I joking????

Ep04.

Zac Vertrees.

Zac refers to his home Woodie as the Pleasure Pyramid. A selection of edges screwed into the exposed beams of his top floor bedroom ceiling.

Poised dangerously close to a large glass window, Zac throws himself between grips and edges wildly, often launching uncontrollably off the board and crashing onto the bedroom floor with the lightness of a collection of fridges falling gracefully out of a tree.

The focus here is training. It may not be as fun as a climbing gym, “but it gets you fucking strong!”

Ep05.

Andrea Hah.

Andreas home Woodie was built with two purposes in mind. One was the need for something steeper than usual boards as a means of really targeting a specific weakness on steep ground. And the other was the need to have something safe and convenient to train on with her son, Max.

“It’s important to me to have somewhere convenient to train, so that I can get in a quick session while Max is having a nap, and also somewhere safe so that he can hang out down here if he’s awake.”

The home training center features a 54 degree board, a collection of top quality holds, soft padded flooring, LED strip lighting and even a “force testing computer thing” that plugs into a hang board.

Ep06.

Stu Simons.

The Board Room.

After a massive amount of work to bring this old shed back to life, Stu is now the proud owner of the Board Room, a multi functional backyard froth centre!

The training area consists of a collection of hangboards, an assortment of Tassie Oak edges and a Moonboard, beautifully crafted out of 24mm Birch Plywood.

When not training, Stu spends his time in the adjoining room, tinkering away on his car. Two totally different passions with an equal amount of froth!
